The LTS Academy near Dortmund is your expert partner for all aspects of occupational safety. Feel free to contact us!

As an employer, you are legally obligated to implement occupational safety measures and adapt them as needed to changing circumstances to ensure the safety and health of your employees in the workplace. Occupational safety plays a crucial role: as one of the fundamental components of workplace health and safety, it aims to relieve the burden on employees and protect them from accidents and work-related illnesses. The law mandates the appointment of an occupational safety specialist (SifA) to provide the company with appropriate safety advice and support.

In companies with more than 20 employees, a safety officer must be appointed in addition to the occupational safety specialist. As your contact for occupational safety, we will of course also handle the corresponding training for your employees.

Safety officers are volunteers and serve as points of contact for their colleagues. They also support the employer in implementing accident prevention measures. The number of safety officers to be appointed depends on the company's risk potential, their proximity to employees in terms of location, time, and expertise, as well as the number of employees.

FAQ: Questions and Answers

In-house occupational safety specialist: Is training worthwhile?

While employers are legally required to appoint a safety specialist, they generally have the option of choosing between an external specialist and an in-house employee. Employees from within the company or its own facilities are eligible for this role, provided they have received appropriate training or further education. In addition to qualifications, the availability of the safety specialist should also be considered for economic reasons. This availability is regulated by the Occupational Safety and Health Act and DGUV Regulation 2 and depends on the type and size of the company. Businesses are divided into three support groups, each receiving between 0.2 and 4 hours of occupational safety specialist support per employee per year, depending on the hazard potential.

A brief example: A company with 250 employees would need approximately 1,000 hours of occupational safety support annually if the risk is very high, while only around 50 hours per year would be required if the risk is low. Since not only the actual working hours but also regular training hours need to be factored in, it should be carefully assessed whether such employee training is economically viable for each individual company.
